The Marca Fermana is bordered along the Adriatic coast by the Chienti River to the north and the Aso River to the south, and by the Sibillini Mountains to the west. Its total area is approximately 1,000 square kilometers and its population is 190,000.
It features the typical characteristics of the Apennine landscape, with a flat coastal strip, a rich and varied hilly hinterland, and the mountainous area of the Sibillini Mountains. The latter boasts such a varied and distinctive flora and fauna that it has been designated a National Park. Its spectacular beauty is complemented and enriched by peaks over 2,000 meters high, such as Monte Vettore, Priora, and Sibilla, as well as by deep gorges and crevices, such as Infernaccio and Foce di Montemonaco.

The theme of landscape finds a context of ancient memory in the Fermo area; the conscious and constant presence of man has indeed modified the aspects, ensuring the preservation of natural and cultural elements. There are many villages from whose terraces one can admire the variety of the Fermo landscape, where the long tradition of sharecropping has designed the hills with geometric precision. The existence of Fermo since the Bronze Age is documented by archaeological finds discovered in the three Picene necropolises excavated around the city and, judging by their consistency, testify to it being a large Picene-Villanovan center.
